We all have an innate healing wisdom that lives inside of us.
I often hear it when clients sign up for health coaching. They’ll say to me…
- “I know I need to eat better”
- “I know I need to exercise”
- “I know I need to quit my job”
- “I know I need to end my dead-end relationship”
- “I know I need to relax”
Most of us know exactly what we need to do to help ourselves, but most of us don’t take action on it.
I believe it’s because we haven’t been taught to make ourselves our number one priority.
Self-care is not on the agenda at our schools and it’s not taught in our homes or workplace.
So where are we supposed to learn this valuable information?
I learned about self-care and the body’s natural ability to heal through my own sickness. I was dysfunctionally programmed, like many other humans on this planet, to wait until disease came and knocked me to the floor before I made an effort to do something.
The “something” I did was not recommended by my doctors. What I did was considered radical and unconventional.
Instead of taking radioactive iodine to destroy my thyroid and then be on Synthroid for the rest of my life, I chose to take responsibility for my disease; the disease living inside my body that was being fed by my poor diet and lifestyle choices.
You can read that story here: Radiate My Thyroid? What?! No Freakin’ Way!
Within fourteen days of taking responsibility for my health and incorporating self-care, I noticed improvements; clear skin, better sleep, regular bowel movements, and increased energy.
Very quickly, I made the connection that within me (and all of us) lives an innate healing power. All we have to do was nourish it with the proper physical, emotional and spiritual food it needs to thrive.
It’s been over twenty years since making my initial commitment to self-care, and today my vibrant health (as well as the health of many clients and students) is proof that we have a LOT of power over our conditions.
The ability to heal an imbalanced (or diseased) condition takes patience, persistence, and hard work, and you can do it!
Here are some simple steps to take today to activate your body’s innate healing wisdom:
STEP ONE – Take responsibility for your health (and your illness).
This may sound harsh, but whatever the condition is, own it.
It is yours.
It’s time to accept that you are the creator of your life and take full responsibility for what has manifested in your body/mind.
This is the beginning of the healing process.
And, this is also the hardest part for most folks. Once you get through this…. the rest is cake.
STEP TWO – Develop awareness of your physical body
Check-in with your physical body to see how it’s feeling on a daily basis.
Your body is the vessel that is carrying you through this life – it’s a good idea to get to know it more intimately.
- Is it aching?
- Is your skin irritated?
- Do you have vibrant energy?
- Are you struggling to get out of bed and make it through the day?
- Are you sleeping well?
- Is your digestive system functioning properly?
If your body is not functioning properly it’s time for some serious self-care.
STEP THREE – Eat clean and get off the crap!
It’s not rocket science!
Our daily food becomes our cells, our blood, our organs, our body, and our mind.
We are what we eat. And, I mean that literally!
If we eat crap we cannot create vibrant health.
Put your money where your mouth is and purchase local, seasonal food that is naturally grown and lovingly prepared.
It’s as simple, and as hard, as that.
STEP FOUR – Dig deeper into the emotional body (the chakras)
It’s only here, in the emotional body, that you can begin recognizing behavior patterns that may or may not be health-supportive.
It’s time to discover who you are and what is your relationship to yourself and to the world around you.
If I had simply changed my diet and my lifestyle without working on my emotional body, self-healing would not have been as effective.
Open your mind, work with a professional, and get to the root of what moves you to do the things that you do.

STEP FIVE – Incorporate many healing techniques
Use ancient and/or modern healing practices that works with the body/mind/spirit, and not against it.
Some healing methods that I personally recommend to clients include:
- Massage therapy
- Qi Gong
- Tai Chi
- Chakra healing
- Herbs as medicine
- Sound Healing
- and others…
I’m a big fan of trying everything and anything to help your body heal. There is no better place to be living than in a happy, healthy body that is supporting you on your journey through life.
And remember, that as long as you are alive and breathing you can improve any condition.
Once we become aware of our situation, take full responsibility and make adjustments, we flip the switch from disease-promoting to self-healing.
You can do it!
