On my thyroid webinar a curious woman asked me the question that everyone wanted to know…
She said, “Do I have to cook all of my meals to heal my thyroid?”
The answer is NO!
Ideally, it would be AWESOME if you learned some cooking techniques to support your body. But, the truth is, you do NOT need to know how to cook to heal your thyroid.
What you do need to know is the specific foods for healing, and how they should be prepared to improve your thyroid health. Once you understand what to eat and how it should be eaten, you can eat almost anywhere.
Food can medicinal or it can be harmful.
For example, if you have an autoimmune thyroid condition like Graves or Hashimotos, this can indicate both a compromised digestive system and a frazzled nervous system.
The first thing you have to do is make sure your food is prepared in a way that you can best absorb it. If you eat grilled or pan-seared chicken (or any other meat) with a compromised digestive system, this is very BAD choice. Grilling or cooking meat in a pan, tightens the proteins making it harder for someone with a compromised digestive system to break down and utilize the nutrients.
A much better option would be braised or stewed meat instead. Something like a chicken soup would be ideal.
The second thing, and even more importantly, is that before you sit to eat ANY food, the nervous system has to be calm and relaxed. If your body is in sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), this seriously compromises digestion (and blood sugar).
- Are you sitting down to eat?
- Are you relaxed and enjoying food?
- Are you taking the time to chew before swallowing?
It’s not just what you eat and how it’s prepared, optimum thyroid health also depends on your daily eating habits. The physical state your body is in and how you eat your food, could make or break a digestive-related autoimmune thyroid condition.
