On one of my thyroid webinars, a curious woman asked me the question that everyone wanted to know…
She said, “Do I have to cook all of my meals to heal my thyroid?”
The answer is NO!
Ideally, it would be AWESOME if you learned some cooking techniques to support your body. But, the truth is, you do NOT need to know how to cook to heal your thyroid.
What you do need to know is the specific foods for healing, and how they should be prepared to improve your thyroid health.
Once you understand what to eat and how it should be prepared, you can eat almost anything.
Food can medicinal or it can be harmful.
For example, if you have an autoimmune thyroid condition like Graves or Hashimotos, this can indicate a compromised digestive system, a frazzled nervous system, and an overload of antigens.
The first thing you have to do is make sure your food is prepared in a way that your body can best absorb it.
If you eat grilled or pan-seared chicken (or any other meat), and you have a weak or compromised digestive system, this is a BAD choice. Grilling or cooking meat in a pan, tightens the proteins making it harder for someone with a weakened digestive system to break down and utilize the nutrients.
A much better option would be braised or stewed meat instead. Something like chicken soup would be better.
More importantly than what you eat, is that before you sit to eat ANY food, the nervous system has to be calm and relaxed. If your body is in the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), this seriously compromises digestion (and blood sugar).
Some questions to ask yourself are:
- Am I sitting down to eat?
- Am I relaxed and enjoying food?
- Am I taking the time to chew before swallowing?
It’s not just what you eat and how it’s prepared, optimum thyroid health also depends on your daily eating habits.
The physical and emotional state your body is in, and how you eat your food, could make or break a digestive-related autoimmune thyroid condition.
