The first gland people blame for weight gain is usually their thyroid.
This is understandable because the thyroid is responsible for the body’s metabolism.
But, and this is a big BUTT (pun intended here!), the weight gain you may be experiencing is probably NOT due to a faulty thyroid gland.
There are many other processes in the body that contribute to weight gain, and/or an inability to lose weight. Read on here: Are you gaining weight and unable to lose it?
Thyroid nodules are very common.
According to Dr. Mario Skugo, Endocrinologist, “Small thyroid nodules are common, with 50 percent of women over the age of 50 having them, but the vast majority of them are benign.”
And, the rate of thyroid nodules continues to increase as we age:
- 60% of 60 year-old women have at least one thyroid nodule
- 70% of 70 year-old women have at least one thyroid nodule
So, the big question is do they, or do they not, lead to cancer. And, what do you need to do about it?

Over two decades ago, I was diagnosed with incurable thyroid disease. I had a large goiter (pictured above) plus an auto-immune thyroid condition.
I was also suffering from allergies, cold sores, poor immunity, and I was 25 pounds heavier than I am today.
My doctor recommended that we radiate my thyroid.
My gut instinct said, “no freakin’ way!” I questioned that treatment. And, if I hadn’t, I would not have a thyroid today. Read on for more about my personal journey with the disease that changed my life. Radiate my Thyroid? No Freakin’ Way!
One of the reasons doctors prescribe medication for thyroid disease is to help ease a patient’s suffering and pain. The problem with most prescription medications though is their negative side effects.
Medications for hypothyroid and Hashimoto’s can lead to rapid or irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, irritability, tremors, impaired fertility, shortness of breath, nervousness, sleeplessness, hair loss, and decreased bone density.
And, medications for hyperthyroid and graves can cause skin rash, itching, abnormal hair loss, vomiting, swelling, joint and muscle pain, dizziness, drowsiness, decreased white blood cells, decreased platelets, and unusual bleeding.
