As spring approaches we purge our homes of excess clutter and proudly declare that we are “Spring Cleaning.” Chances are your home isn’t the only thing that’s acquired a little excess bulk during the cold winter months. This year, take your spring cleaning one step further to include your body.
Here are 5 tips to feel and look your best this spring
Tip 1: Know where your food comes from. Grab a box of cookies or crackers from your pantry. Do you know what Polysorbate 60 or Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate looks like growing in nature? I didn’t think so. Packaged foods are highly processed and contain harmful ingredients the average American cannot identify, let alone pronounce.
Include more fresh produce to gradually crowd out those processed foods. Explore a farmers’ market, plant a small garden, and go to a “pick your own” farm.
Tip 2: Play like a kid again. Take your exercise outside and do the activities that make you lose track of time. Ride a bike, walk your dog, or pull out those dusty roller blades. Fly a kite or take the family to the water park. You’ll have a blast and burn calories without even thinking about it.
Tip 3: Include the entire family. How many times does Mom go on a diet that is destined to fail because she has to make a meal for herself and a separate meal for dad and the kids? Make healthy choices as a family. Slow down and enjoy time together. When children take part in meal preparation, what they’re willing to eat will surprise you!
Tip 4: Make it a priority. We all have the same 24 hours in a day. Optimize your time to create the life you want to live. Don’t wait for the time to find you. If you want a healthy lifestyle, you have to schedule time for cooking, eating, and exercising just as you would a doctor’s appointment.
Tip 5: Get support. Having someone to support you, challenge you, and hold you accountable is the secret to success. Find a walking buddy, connect with a friend, or hire a health coach. They’re much more affordable than you think.
